THE CUMBRIAN
MOUNTAIN EXPRESS RAILTOUR 2008
A very early start for this Rail tour. Pick up
from Wellingborough was 5.50 am !! After picking up passengers at
other stations we headed west away from Chesterfield along the Hope
Valley line in order to connect with the West Coast Main Line. This
was done by passing through Manchester. Upon arrival at Carnforth
our class 47 moved to the rear and Princess Elizabeth took over the
reins. By golly what a fantastic sound was heard as she pounded up
Shap. As we approached Carlisle we did a 'u' turn and headed down
The Settle and Carlisle line to Appleby. From here it was over the
Ribblehead Viaduct and on to Hellifield where The Princess departed.
I had not been on a rail tour for some 20 years so really enjoyed
this day out. We arrived back at Wellingborough around 10pm after
travelling over 550 miles. The organisers were Kingfisher Rail
tours. We thank them for a great day out.
