FOXFIELD RAILWAY STEAM GALA JULY 19th 2008

Steam Gala Information - 19th & 20th July

Featuring the return to steam of “Bellerophon” built in 1874 at the Haydock foundary & “Florance No2 “ built in 1954 at Stafford.

The Event

Steam railway enthusiasts from all over the country will be making their way to the Foxfield Railway in Stoke on Trent next weekend for a two day celebration of steam . The Gala will see no less than six locomotives in steam. The event is the culmination of countless thousands hours of voluntary time & effort and will feature the return to steam of two distinctive and ancient engines. Featuring a intensive steam passenger service, goods demonstration’s & displays the members of the Society believe that this years gala will be the best ever held on the Railway.

Visiting locomotive

Visiting the railway for the first time this year for the event is the Bristol based locomotive “Portbury”. In her distinctive docks livery of Grey, lined & lettered in black she will be of considerable interest have never ventured this far north before. Her journey along the M5 & M6 motorways created a stir as passing motorists were intrigued by the sight of the engine in transit.

“Portbury” stands in the shed at Caverswall road.

In addition to above the event will feature a Bayer Peacock locomotive built in Gorton in 1879. A youngster @ 129 years old she will be running with “Bellerophon” over the weekend creating one of the oldest working locomotive displays in world today.“Wimblebury” from the Cannock area of North Staffordshire & Meaford No2 Complete the line up of six working engines.

A frequent train service starts running from around 09.30 each day, with all aspects of the event running till 17.30 each day. Demonstration freight trains will be running on the famous Foxfield Bank with its steep gradients, a prelude to the extension of the railways passenger service back to the village of Dilhorne next year. Visitors will be able to take a unlimited trips on the line, each 5 mile round trip lasting 45 mins. Journeys can be split to allow for rides behind different engines through unspoilt Staffordshire countryside. The railway can be contacted on 01782 396210.

  INFORMATION           STEAM UP          ALEX AND ERNIE       INFORMATION

A mixed bag of weather but a wealth of industrial locomotive power and steam.

Ernie and I arrived at the railway at 8.30am and it was not long before we met our friend from PM VIDEO. Alex produces some very good DVD's and there is information about him if you go to the signpost and click on ' LINKS '. Ernie shot video film today while I took still pictures especially for this web site. The pictures are set out below and I sincerely hope they will bring you much pleasure

The highlight of this event is seeing these powerful little locomotives pounding there way up the one in nineteen gradient from the old mining area.
