PICTORIAL WALKS (PLACE NAMES BEGINNING WITH 'R')

Rushden, Northants (58 images)

This town stands on the A6 trunk road between Bedford and Kettering. In the year 2004 a by-pass was built which has eased the towns traffic congestion. The name 'Rushden' means 'rushy valley' and an iron age site was discovered and excavated near Boundary Avenue in the early 1970's.  Evidence of Roman times have been found near Hayway. The town was mentioned in the Domesday survey of 1086 as Risdene. The Pemberton family, who came from Lancashire around 1460 lived in Rushden Hall for around 200 years. The Sartoris family were the last to live there. The first main industry was lace making. Brick making also took place as there was a large clay pit in Wellingborough Road. By the 1950's almost fifty per cent of trade was in boot and shoe making.
