My mother, born 1911 spent her childhood here residing in Park Street and
being educated across the road at Park Street School. Her name was Ivy Saunders
and one of the stories she often told was the day that they were given the
afternoon off school to watch the first ever bus draw in to Raunds Square. I
still have an aunt and a cousin in Raunds. In 1937 I was carried inside my
mother to be born at Leagrave, Bedfordshire (parents moved there to find
work) and my first ever holidays were spent in Raunds at 4 Thorpe Street, a row
of cottages at the rear of the hall, now a car park.
Across the road I remember a cinema,
The Tivole I think. When it closed
Rosebud Dolls (Mattell) took it over. Flats now stand on the site. On a Sunday my Auntie
Phil used to send my cousin Graham and me to the bakehouse in Brook Street with
a baking tin and a jug of batter, it was here the Yorkshire pudding was made for
Sunday lunch.
This letter was received 20th July
2008 from America.
HI KIETH,
I was just browsing
your walks of Raunds again, and realised that maybe you would
remember a few historical gems. Its good to reminisce
I can remember
the first barbers in Raunds, situated at the corner of the
Tivoli, nearly opposite The Hall, or old council offices. It was
very tiny.
You may be interested
to know that the old newspaper shop that was situated at the end
of a row of 3 or 4 cottages, next to The Globe pub, going towards Wellington Hill way, has now got itself a very interesting label. I can remember an
old lady living above the shop and when you went in, she would
look through a window at the top of
the stairs to see who was in the shop. This was in the 60,s. My
mate did a paper round from there, maybe the name was Corby, I
don't remember. Well in the
early eighties the old house was let out to a young couple, who
had just got married. They lived there for a few days ,and left
screaming in the middle of the night, saying it was haunted. They
never returned there. It has since been investigated, and proved
to be very active. It is also mentioned in several books. fame, ha,.
Can you also
remember Mr Sims shop, in the main street? The shop
nearly opposite where your ma lived? It sold the best kali in
Raunds. Remember it turned your finger green.HA,HA.
THE CARLTON picture
house owned by MRS CAMOZZI, was sold to a MR CLIVE SADDINGTON
(recently deceased) and his friend known only as sweep, in the eighties and my first
husband STEVE SEWARD laid the floor, and levelled it when it
became a nightclub for a few years. the floor is still the same
now all these years on.
I wont
bore you ,but one last item, can you remember when THE TANNERY
burnt down, in titty ho? it was in the very early 60s,and they
had to pull down the chimney for fear of it falling
into titty ho,. I was at school and ran to watch the spectacle at
home time, It burnt for 2 days.
best wishes,
Mary Jackson,
