PICTORIAL WALKS

Melchbourne, Bedfordshire (17 images)

This little village lies in the countryside to the east of the A6 Rushden to Bedford trunk road. There is a mention of the village in the Domesday Book and it is in the history books before the Norman Conquest. The first mention of the church was in 1176. There were two rows of lovely thatched cottages dating back to the 1700's, unfortunately one row was burnt down in the 1950's. The Old School built in 1857 not only had classrooms but also living accommodation for the teacher. It was nice chatting to a lady called Audrey who was born in the village and furnished me with a great deal of information. She is also a church warden. I thank her. As Melchbourne is a small village may I suggest you visit Yeldon at the same time. Another pretty village just a couple of miles to the west.
