Islip - locally pronounced 'eye-slip'
was recorded in the Doomsday Book as 'Islep'. The village lies on the west bank of
the River Nene across the old stone bridge from Thrapston. Islip House in Chapel
Hill Road was the home of Thomas Squire who played a large part in making the
River Nene navigable between Thrapston and Peterborough. There was a grand
opening ceremony in 1737. St Nicholas Church dates from the 14th century and has some nice stained
glass. The old mill dates to the early 1700's and was leased by Thomas Squire during
the river works. The mill continued to to grind corn until 1960.
