The village is noted for it's outstanding Queen Eleanor Cross. It is one of
twelve crosses built by King Edward 1st in 1294 in memory of his wife who died
prematurely in December 1290. The ancient bridge over the River Iseis 40 years
older and originally was constructed to replace a ford. However in these modern
times the bridge has restrictions as to weight and size of vehicles, so many cars
and vans still use the ford. The main A43 trunk road passes on the west side of
the village so only local traffic uses the local roads and lanes.
