The first "Milk Bar" opened in Waller Street in Luton where we sipped milkshakes through a straw and played "Cara-Mia" by David Whitfield over and over again on the jukebox. My first taste of work was at a farm during my last school summer holidays gathering in the harvest with horse and cart. This was from 7am until 7pm for 6 days a week for the grand sum of £3 and 10 shillings. I also did a double morning paper round for 7 shillings and sixpence per week. I saved 1 shilling per week in the newsagents' Christmas Club to buy a Monopoly Game which cost me 1 Guinea ( £1.05 in today's' money!)

On leaving school in 1951, my first full time job was with the Luton Co-Operative Society at Crossways Grocery store delivering orders on a carrier bike for 3 days and also working in the shop for 3 days. The manager was Ron Brown and the only other name I remember was Jean Askew. My first wage packet (for a 48 hour week) was £2 and 2 Shillings.  I remained in the employ of the Co-Op Society until 1955 when I was called up for National Service duty.
